Hope and Healing / Grief Workshop with Monica Vera [Virtual]
Veronica Javier hosted Monica Vera for our podcast on grief. Monica Vera is a Certified Grief Educator who is committed to providing the highest level of grief support through education, experience, and insights into the often unacknowledged rocky terrain of grief.
In the podcast she shared how she got into this work as well as questions around what grief is; how to find the words to talk to someone/loved about grief; how grief can affect us as practitioners and educators when we’re working with, and in the community through secondary losses; and how we can walk with our clients/patients/friends/family in their grief journey. The podcast also carved out some space to talk about grief in the context of our identity as Filipinos and how we carry grief within our culture.
Monica invited Network members to her follow-up virtual group session on grief called “Hope and Healing: A conversation on grief and loss during the holidays”. In this session Monica offered a safe space for us to invite grievers and also those who wanted to support them during the holiday season. The virtual gathering supported meaningful connections and provided grievers and learners with heartfelt support.

CASWE-ACFTS Conference in Toronto [York University]
The CASWE 2023 Conference was held in-person in Toronto for the first time since the start of the pandemic. We hosted a conversation circle with Dr. Fritz Pino, Veronica Javier, Alyssa Schenk, Ruth Wilson, Christa Sato, and Shella Zagada.
Abstract for the Conversation Circle: For the past six CASWE-ACFTS conferences, the Filipino Canadian Social and Community Workers Network (FCSCWN) has held panels and conversation circles in order to illustrate our presence in the field of Canadian social work. Informed and inspired by the historical and contemporary organizing of the Association of Black Social Workers in Nova Scotia and the Thunderbird – Indigenous Social Work Educators Circle, this 2023 conversation circle brings together Filipino/a/x doctoral candidates and early career scholars to hear our perspectives on the motivations and influences behind our decolonizing praxes, or critical theory-informed practice. We draw on the various influences from Asian, Black and Indigenous social work theorizations, writing, and practice, and discuss how these critical genealogies have informed the way we organize, write, live, love, and work.
This conversation circle serves to shape directions for our individual and collective praxes, as we invite practitioners and other scholars to join in the conversation. This conversation circle will also be recorded for our SSHRC funded podcast project.

On May 3rd, 2023 the FCSCWN hosted Virtual Meet and Greet Event for our Network members. This was an opportunity for the broader network to meet our coordinators, and to share ideas and work being done with FilCan social and community workers.

Pinoys on Parliament
Monica Batac and Ashley Saulog represented the FCSCWN during the Pinoys on Parliament 2023 Community Symposium held on Sunday, February 26th at the University of Ottawa.
